About the Sony FE 16mm F1.8 G – E Mount
Dynamic perspectives and smooth bokeh at 16 mm
With a 16 mm angle of view and F1.8 aperture, the FE 16mm F1.8 G can capture wide-angle imagery with gorgeous background bokeh. This expressive prime G Lens™ is great for scenery, architecture, starry skies, and more. It also offers outstanding close-up capability and precise, quiet AF. The FE 16mm F1.8 G accepts standard 67 mm filters, is compact and lightweight, and is easy to balance on a gimbal.
Outstanding resolution at ultra-wide 16 mm angle of view
Two AA (Advanced Aspherical) lens minimise field curvature and astigmatism for stunning image-wide resolution at all apertures. One Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element and three ED elements suppress chromatic aberration right out to the image periphery, while an optimised coating minimises flare and ghosting. This is an ideal lens for creating dynamic, spectacularly resolved wide-angle perspectives.
Gorgeous G Lens bokeh and outstanding close-up performance
This G Lens delivers stunning bokeh with its large F1.8 maximum aperture, 11-blade circular iris, and carefully controlled spherical aberration. Close-up performance is excellent with a minimum focus distance of 0.15 m / 0.5 ft and maximum magnification of 0.25x when using AF (0.13 m / 0.43 ft, 0.30x for MF). All of this makes it possible to capture unique wide-angle perspectives with deep, exquisite bokeh.
Large-aperture ultra-wide performance in a compact lens
The use of aspherical lens elements, including Sony’s high-precision AA (Advanced Aspherical) lens, has made it possible to create a full-frame ultra-wide lens that is a compact 73.8 x 75 mm (3 x 3 inch) and weighs just 304 g (10.8 oz). It is small, lightweight, and mobile while delivering spectacular imaging performance for a wide range of subjects including landscapes, architecture, night scenes, and more.
Fast, precise autofocus supports high-level imaging
Two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors ensure fast, precise AF and tracking. A control algorithm developed specifically for the XD linear motors achieves enhanced response that largely negates delay and vibration that can occur when driving a large focus group, for exceptionally quiet, low-vibration operation. All of this makes it possible to capture important moments when shooting active, fast-moving subjects.
Refined, stable performance for movies
Advanced lens technology reduces focus breathing so that changes in angle of view are minimised for smooth movie footage. The breathing compensation function1 provided in compatible α bodies is also supported, and in-body Active Mode2 image stabilisation can make it easy to capture stable wide-angle movie imagery while walking. The lens accepts standard 67 mm filters, and is easy to balance on a gimbal.
Comprehensive control and solid reliability
A focus ring, focus hold button, focus mode switch, aperture ring, and iris lock switch are provided. Alternative functions can be assigned to the focus hold button. The aperture ring provides hands-on control, while a click ON/OFF switch adds versatility. A focus mode switch allows instant autofocus/manual switching. A dust and moisture resistant design3 and fluorine front-element coating maximise reliability.

The beauty of G Lens™ bokeh at F1.8
When beautiful bokeh is the goal, this G Lens really delivers with its large F1.8 maximum aperture, 11-blade circular aperture mechanism, and carefully controlled spherical aberration.
Eye-opening close-up performance
Close-up performance is excellent with a minimum focus distance of 0.15 m / 0.5 ft and maximum magnification of 0.25x when using AF (0.13 m / 0.43 ft, 0.30x for MF). The ability to get that close with an ultra-wide lens makes it possible to capture dynamic perspectives with deep, exquisite bokeh.
Refined, stable performance for movies
Focus breathing is controlled so that angle of view shifts are minimised for smooth movie footage. The breathing compensation function2 in compatible α bodies is also supported, and in-body Active Mode3 image stabilisation makes it easy to shoot stable movies while walking. The lens accepts 67 mm filters, and is compact, lightweight, and easy to balance on a gimbal.
Large-aperture, ultra-wide, and compact
Aspherical lens elements, including Sony’s high-precision AA (Advanced Aspherical) lens, result in a full-frame ultra-wide lens that is 73.8 x 75 mm (3 x 3 in) and weighs just 304 g (10.8 oz). It is compact, lightweight, and mobile while delivering spectacular imaging performance for a wide range of subjects including landscapes, architecture, night scenes, and more.
Advanced AF supports high-level imaging
Two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors ensure fast, precise AF and tracking. A dedicated control algorithm achieves enhanced response with minimal delay and vibration so that the lens’s large focus group is driven smoothly and quietly. All of this makes it easier to capture the most important moments when shooting active, fast-moving subjects.
Aperture ring with click ON/OFF switch
An aperture ring provides on-the-fly aperture control, and a click ON/OFF switch optimises aperture ring operation for different types of shooting. The click stops can be turned ON to provide tactile feedback when shooting stills, or OFF for quiet, continuous aperture control when shooting movies.
Comprehensive control
In addition to the normal focus hold function, other functions can be assigned to the focus hold button via the camera controls as needed. A focus mode switch conveniently located on the side of the lens barrel makes it easy to switch between auto and manual focus without having to take your eye off the viewfinder.
Natural linear manual focus response
Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, so control feels immediate and precise.
Environmentally conscious
Sony’s environmental plan “Road to Zero” aims for a zero environmental footprint by 2050. The environmental footprint of this product has been minimised from development through supply chain, production, and packaging. We are also transitioning to non-plastic packaging materials. Plant-based non-woven fabrics are used for product bags.
Extra reliability for outdoor shooting
A dust and moisture resistant design4 provides ample reliability when shooting outdoors. The front element features a fluorine coating that repels contaminants and makes the lens easier to clean.
Iris lock prevents unwanted aperture changes
An iris lock switch prevents unwanted aperture changes while shooting. When locked, the aperture is either locked at the [A] position or can be rotated between any of the manual settings.
